The Great Kathmandu Tandoori Restaurant Founded in 1987 The Great Kathmandu is spoken of all over the globe.
In far fetched places like Australia and America It's the Talk of the town.
Winners of the coverted readers best indian restaurant in the UK award.

But, It wasn't always like that.....Gopal Dangol was already gathering a name for himself as one of the finest chefs in Kathmandu and it wasn't long before the word spread to England.

Soon after he was pin pointed by a restaurateur in the North West to cook for him in a new and exciting project.

Word spread fast and Gopal started a new venture with several collages this was to be a milestone for Asian dining in the north west.

Nepalese food had finally arrived in Manchester in the form of The Kathmandu.

With the Kathmandu gaining almost Cult status things took a turn for the worst and slowly the partners drifted apart.

After the Kathmandu ceased business in '86 Gopal begin work on a new project, an altogether 'Greater' project, The Great Kathmandu Tandoori Restaurant. Some say that it was fate that Gopal came to England but I know it was sheer determination and hard work. Even today those same recipes are used today in all our curries. That recipe is Nepalese Courage and adaptability.

What our Customers Say. About 1989 we were staying at the Brittania Inn and decided to go to look for something to eat, my wife was pregnant at the time so wasn't able to walk far,it was getting late for restaurants to be open and we expected to end up with fish and chips or an Indian at best.

Then we saw a busy restaurant I think it was on a junction but definitely had steps going up to it. we went in and asked if they were still serving, the restaurant was jam packed but we were told if we could wait 20mins we would be served. The smell was so irresistible we would have waited an hour, that 20mins was torture watching others eat. Eventually we sat down and started eating, it's been so long we can't remember the menu but the only thing that has stayed in our memories for 16 years is the chicken, we have nver tasted chicken like it, it simply melted in your mouth. The restaurant was starting to empty and soon we were joined at our table by various members of the family who were intrigued to find out that only a copuple of hours drive there was a country very similar in alot of repects to NepaL with high mountains and friendly locals, we stayed very late just talking and to this day this is the best restaurant experience of our lives.

We have often thought if the restauarant was still open but having read an article in the Telegraph recently and having visited the website tonight it most certainly is, we do hope that we have got the right place.

We will be visiting Manchesterr this June and will most certainly book a meal at the restauarant"
